Human Menopausal Gonadotropin (HMG): Balancing FSH and LH in One Intermediate

2026-7-6

Human menopausal gonadotropin (HMG), also known as menotropin, is a unique urinary‑derived API that contains a 1:1 ratio of follicle‑stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH). This balanced composition makes HMG a critical intermediate for pharmaceutical companies developing ovulation induction products.

Unlike pure FSH preparations, HMG provides both gonadotropins in a single powder. The LH component supports theca cell function and androgen synthesis, which can be beneficial for certain patient subgroups. From a manufacturing standpoint, producing HMG requires careful control of the FSH‑to‑LH ratio throughout the purification process. Our proprietary multi‑step chromatography (ion exchange plus hydrophobic interaction) yields HMG with a ratio of 0.9–1.1, meeting USP and EP specifications.

HMG intermediates are available as crude concentrate (for customers with downstream purification capabilities) or as purified, lyophilized API. The crude grade is particularly attractive for formulators who wish to perform their own final polishing steps, as it offers maximum flexibility at a lower cost per million IU.
