Continuous Manufacturing Gains Traction in Purification of Peptide Hormones

Traditionally, gonadotropin purification has relied on batch chromatography. A growing number of manufacturers – both urinary and recombinant – are exploring continuous manufacturing (CM) technologies such as simulated moving bed (SMB) chromatography. CM offers higher throughput, reduced buffer consumption, and more consistent product quality. For urinary-derived intermediates, adopting CM could narrow the cost and purity gap with recombinant products. While still emerging, this trend suggests that future purification lines will prioritize efficiency and automation, benefiting API buyers through lower costs and faster lead times.
